Chapter 10 - The Vault

The bank would not release the document package simply because Nathan Cole wanted it.

For once, Nathan found that reassuring.

Olivia entered Meridian National with Miriam Chen and Priya beside her.

Nathan waited in the conference room.

When Olivia returned twenty minutes later, she carried a sealed archival envelope.

The bank manager had documented the chain of custody.

Priya opened it on camera.

Inside lay the original board secretary log.

A compact encrypted drive.

A packet of printed messages.

And a handwritten note from Eleanor Cole.

Nathan’s mother had written it three years before her death.

If there is ever a dispute concerning Emma’s trust interest, no successor trustee may assume voting power merely because a beneficiary or parent is accused of wrongdoing. Removal requires written findings after notice and opportunity to respond, unless there is a criminal conviction or documented incapacity.

Priya read it twice.

“This is not necessarily the governing instrument.”

Olivia removed another document.

“It’s attached to the executed trust amendment.”

There it was.

Signed.

Witnessed.

Notarized.

Miles’s appointment as successor trustee had been premature.

Possibly invalid.

Nathan stared at the page.

“If his trust vote is invalid, every shareholder action he took using Emma’s shares can be challenged.”

Priya nodded.

“Potentially.”

Olivia’s encrypted drive opened using a password Eleanor had once used for greenhouse supply files.

Inside were photographs, emails, and a long audio recording.

Rebecca’s voice came first.

“You promised me Olivia would be gone before the trust vote.”

Miles replied, “She will be.”

“And Nathan?”

“He’ll sign what I put in front of him.”

Rebecca laughed.

“You make him sound stupid.”

“No. Busy. Grieving. Proud. People don’t need to be stupid to be manipulated. They only need to believe the manipulator is on their side.”

Nathan felt the words like a knife.

The conversation continued.

Rebecca asked, “When do I get my part?”

“When Northstar closes.”

“And if Nathan refuses the sale?”

“We build pressure.”

“How?”

“Marriage. Reputation. Whatever becomes necessary.”

Rebecca said softly, “You still think I can control him.”

“You already did.”

Olivia stopped the recording.

Emma was not in the room.

Nathan was grateful.

Priya said, “This is substantial.”

“Enough?” Nathan asked.

“For a civil injunction? Maybe. For criminal charges? It supports a case, but prosecutors will want financial records, authentication, corroborating witnesses.”

Nathan looked at Olivia.

“Why didn’t you release this?”

“Because I didn’t have it.”

“You had the vault.”

“I had photographs. The original package arrived later.”

“From whom?”

Olivia looked toward Grace.

Grace finally spoke.

“Eleanor’s former accountant.”

Nathan blinked.

“Samuel Price?”

Grace nodded.

“He died last winter.”

Nathan stiffened.

“No convenient mysteries,” Priya said sharply, sensing where his mind went. “He died of cancer. We have records. He mailed the package before entering hospice.”

Olivia added, “He had kept duplicate trust papers because Eleanor asked him to.”

Nathan leaned back.

Reality was worse than fantasy.

No secret resurrection.

No miraculous stranger.

Just paperwork that people had ignored because a polished attorney had told them what it meant.

Priya’s phone buzzed.

She checked it.

“The DA wants Olivia for an interview regarding the Meridian account.”

Olivia’s face tightened.

Miriam said, “We expected this.”

Nathan stood.

“I’m coming.”

“No,” Olivia said.

He looked at her.

“This is mine.”

“You shouldn’t face it alone.”

“I already did that part.”

She gathered the documents.

Before leaving, she stopped beside Nathan.

“There’s one thing I haven’t told you.”

He waited.

“In April, I was ready to take Emma to Canada.”

Nathan’s expression changed.

Olivia continued before he could speak.

“I had passports. A school application. Everything.”

“You were going to abduct her?”

“I never did it.”

“You planned it.”

“Yes.”

Nathan stepped back.

“You accuse me of failing to trust you, and you were preparing to disappear with my daughter.”

“I was terrified.”

“So was I.”

“That doesn’t make either of us right.”

The room went silent.

It was the first time since Olivia’s return that Nathan saw clearly that exposing Rebecca would not restore the family he once had.

Some damage belonged to Miles and Rebecca.

Some damage belonged to Nathan.

And some belonged to Olivia.

Then Priya’s phone rang again.

This time it was Caroline.

Her voice was urgent.

“Miles moved the Northstar vote.”

Nathan looked at the calendar.

“To when?”

May you like

“Forty-eight hours from now.”

The conspiracy had stopped hiding.
