Chapter 9 - Olivia Comes Home

Olivia Hart returned to Hawthorne Estate through the service gate at 6:20 the following evening.
Nathan watched from the library window.
Seven months had changed her.
Her dark hair was shorter.
She looked thinner.
More guarded.
But when Emma saw her crossing the courtyard, none of that mattered.
“Mom!”
Emma ran.
Olivia dropped her bag and fell to her knees.
They collided beside Eleanor’s fountain.
Emma sobbed into her neck.
“You came back.”
“I came back.”
“You said you would.”
“I know.”
Nathan stood ten feet away and felt like an intruder inside his own family.
Emma pulled Olivia toward him.
“Dad knows now.”
Olivia looked at Nathan.
“Does he?”
Nathan said quietly, “Some of it.”
That night they sat around the library table with Priya, Miriam Chen, Grace, and Daniel Ko.
Olivia placed a thick envelope on the table.
“I discovered Arden while reviewing marital financial disclosures.”
Nathan frowned.
“Why were company vendors in our divorce?”
“Because Rebecca’s consulting company appeared in credit-card records. I thought you were paying her before we separated.”
Nathan went pale.
“I wasn’t.”
“I know that now.”
Olivia looked at him.
“At the time, I thought you were having an affair with her.”
“I wasn’t.”
“She made sure I would think you were.”
Nathan remembered charity dinners Rebecca had attended.
Late-night strategy calls.
Messages that had seemed professional.
Olivia continued.
“I confronted Miles. Three days later, North Vale’s audit suddenly ‘found’ the Meridian account in my name.”
Priya asked, “And the board log?”
“Miles contacted me after I left. He said Rebecca was becoming reckless. He offered the original secretary log proving the board never approved Arden as an authorized vendor.”
“Why would he help you?” Nathan asked.
“He wasn’t helping me. He wanted the copies of Arden’s beneficial ownership records I had.”
“A trade.”
“Yes.”
“Did you make it?”
“I gave him incomplete copies.”
Grace smiled faintly.
Olivia did not.
“He realized before he left the greenhouse.”
“What happened?” Nathan asked.
“He threatened Emma.”
Nathan’s chair moved backward.
Olivia met his eyes.
“He said if I created a public scandal, he would make sure every court filing showed a mother under financial investigation and a father with proof she planned to flee the country with their child.”
Nathan remembered the emergency custody petition.
“He used my signature.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
Olivia’s expression hardened.
“I told you not to apologize yet.”
Nathan fell silent.
Olivia opened the envelope.
Inside were photographs of the original board log.
Minutes from meetings.
Handwritten annotations.
Miles’s initials.
There was no approval for Arden.
No board authorization.
No vendor-vetting resolution.
Daniel leaned forward.
“This helps.”
“Original?” Priya asked.
Olivia shook her head.
“The original is in a bank document vault.”
Nathan said, “The White Plains receipt.”
Olivia looked surprised.
“You found it.”
“Yes.”
“Then tomorrow we retrieve it.”
Miriam added, “With counsel present.”
Nathan studied Olivia.
“Why did you keep returning to Hawthorne?”
Her eyes moved toward the greenhouse.
“Because your mother taught me something about that room.”
Nathan waited.
“Eleanor kept copies of everything.”
Grace smiled sadly.
“She trusted paper more than computers.”
Olivia nodded.
“She once told me, ‘Digital records can disappear because someone clicks a button. Paper requires a person to physically destroy it.’”
Nathan looked toward the sealed potting room.
“So you hid evidence there.”
“Some.”
“And the key?”
Olivia hesitated.
“I buried it beneath the flower tray.”
Emma, sitting beside her, brightened.
“I found it.”
“Yes.”
“Why there?”
“Because those were your grandmother’s white camellias.”
Nathan looked at Emma.
Rebecca had screamed at her the moment she disturbed the tray.
You destroy everything you touch.
Rebecca had known where Olivia once hid things.
The bucket had not been random rage.
She had been trying to stop Emma from digging.
Priya’s phone rang.
She answered, listened, then stood.
“What?”
Nathan asked.
Priya put the call on speaker.
Daniel’s forensic banking contact had found the originating IP address used to open Olivia’s fake Meridian account.
The application had been submitted at 11:17 P.M. on October 8.
From Hawthorne Estate.
Nathan felt his skin go cold.
He remembered that night.
He had been in Boston.
Olivia had already moved into a temporary apartment.
Emma had been with her.
Only two adults had slept at Hawthorne.
May you like
Rebecca.
And Miles, who had stayed late after a board dinner because of a storm.
