Chapter 4 - The Woman Everyone Blamed

By midnight, Nathan Cole was a public scandal.

The leaked clip showed Rebecca reaching toward him.

Then Nathan striking her.

It did not show Emma covered in mud.

It did not show the locked greenhouse.

It did not show the bamboo cane.

Cole Heritage Group’s communications director called three times.

Nathan refused to issue a statement.

Miles urged him to claim emotional distress.

Rebecca urged him to apologize publicly.

Nathan trusted neither of them.

At 1:15 A.M., Grace found him alone in Eleanor’s old potting room.

“You should sleep.”

“I did enough sleeping while everyone lied to me.”

Grace closed the door.

“I need to tell you something.”

Nathan looked up.

Grace took a folded envelope from inside her jacket.

“Olivia left this with me in April.”

Nathan stared at it.

“You knew she came back.”

“I knew about three visits.”

“And you said nothing.”

“She begged me not to.”

“She was my daughter’s mother.”

“She believed you were part of what happened to her.”

Nathan flinched.

“Why?”

Grace handed him the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

Rebecca and Miles sat at a private dining table at the Briar Ridge Club.

The date printed on the reverse was eighteen months before Rebecca had supposedly been introduced to Nathan.

Rebecca’s hand rested over Miles’s.

They were looking at each other with unmistakable intimacy.

Nathan read Olivia’s note beneath it.

Rebecca did not meet Miles through work.

They knew each other before she joined Cole Heritage.

Before she began appearing at the same charity events you attended.

Before our marriage collapsed.

Nathan’s throat tightened.

“That proves they knew each other.”

Grace said nothing.

Nathan looked up.

“You think they were having an affair.”

“I think Olivia thought they were.”

He remembered Rebecca’s story.

She had been a reputation-management consultant.

Miles had recommended her after a difficult acquisition.

She had become Nathan’s adviser.

Then his confidante.

Then, after his separation from Olivia, something more.

Rebecca had always insisted they had barely known each other beforehand.

Nathan whispered, “I brought her into my home.”

Grace’s voice was gentle.

“You believed someone you trusted.”

“I believed everyone except Olivia.”

That truth hurt more.

Nathan unfolded the rest of Olivia’s letter.

You will want to ask why I ran.

I did not run from Emma.

I ran because Miles showed me documents saying prosecutors were about to charge me with stealing company money. He told me if I stayed, Rebecca would use the investigation to argue I was an unsafe parent and you would support her.

I did not know which documents were real.

I knew only that some carried your signature.

Nathan stopped reading.

His signature.

Seven months earlier, he had been caring for Eleanor during the final weeks of her illness while simultaneously trying to rescue a failing hotel acquisition.

Miles had brought him stacks of documents.

Nathan had signed many without reading them carefully.

One had authorized an internal investigation into foundation irregularities.

Another had supported an emergency custody application after Miles claimed Olivia intended to leave the country with Emma.

Nathan had believed Olivia was cornering him.

He had not listened when she screamed that she was being framed.

He remembered their last confrontation.

“You signed it,” Olivia had said.

“I had to protect Emma.”

“From me?”

“From what you’re doing.”

Olivia had stared at him as though he were a stranger.

Then she had whispered, “One day you are going to understand what you just helped them do.”

Nathan lowered the letter.

Grace said, “There is more.”

The final page contained a phone number.

Not Olivia’s.

An attorney’s.

Miriam Chen.

Nathan recognized the name from Olivia’s divorce filings.

Below it:

If I disappear again, contact Miriam. She knows where I am.

Nathan reached for his phone.

It rang before he could dial.

Caroline.

His younger sister had served on the Cole Heritage board for eight years.

“Nathan, the board is calling an emergency session tomorrow morning.”

“Because of the video?”

“Because of the video and something Miles just sent us.”

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“Documents showing Olivia transferred $1.2 million through an account opened in her own name.”

Nathan looked at the flash drive on the workbench.

“Those documents may be fabricated.”

Caroline went silent.

Then she said, “You need evidence before you accuse our general counsel of fabricating financial crimes.”

“I have evidence.”

“From Olivia?”

“Yes.”

Caroline exhaled.

“Then you have a serious problem.”

“Why?”

“Because Miles says she tried to blackmail him with forged records months ago.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

Caroline continued.

“And Nathan?”

“Yes?”

“The board has asked Miles to recommend whether you should remain CEO while the domestic-violence complaint is pending.”

The call ended.

Nathan stared at Olivia’s letter again.

One sentence seemed to darken on the page.

Rebecca did not come into our lives by accident.

Nathan finally understood the scale of what he was facing.

Someone had destroyed Olivia’s credibility first.

Now the same machine had turned toward him.
