Chapter 11 - The Marriage Was Part of the Deal

Nathan found the message at 2:00 A.M.
It was buried among thousands of exported texts from Rebecca’s old consulting account.
Rebecca: He asked me to dinner.
Miles: Good.
Rebecca: You’re not jealous?
Miles: This was the point.
Nathan read it three times.
Another message followed.
Rebecca: He still talks about Olivia.
Miles: Then listen. Do not compete with a ghost. Become the person who understands him.
Six weeks later:
Rebecca: He kissed me.
Miles: Do not rush him.
Then:
Rebecca: If we actually marry, what happens to us?
Miles’s reply came eleven minutes later.
Miles: We were never the part that mattered.
Nathan felt something twist inside him.
Olivia entered the library.
“You found them.”
“You knew?”
“Some.”
He turned the laptop toward her.
“Was their relationship real?”
Olivia sat opposite him.
“I don’t know what ‘real’ means to people like them.”
“They were sleeping together?”
“I believe so.”
Nathan closed the laptop.
“Before Rebecca and I married?”
“Yes.”
“And after?”
Olivia looked away.
That was enough.
Nathan laughed once, without humor.
“I spent months thinking I destroyed our marriage.”
“You helped.”
He looked at her sharply.
Olivia did not retreat.
“Rebecca manipulated you. Miles manipulated you. But they exploited things already broken between us.”
Nathan wanted to argue.
He could not.
Their marriage had been strained by work, Eleanor’s illness, money, resentment, and Nathan’s constant assumption that providing security excused emotional absence.
Rebecca had entered through cracks already there.
Olivia said, “That’s why she was good at it.”
At noon, Priya presented the board with the trust amendment and the recording.
Miles appeared on video.
He looked less polished than usual.
“This material is stolen.”
Priya said, “Do you dispute your voice?”
“I dispute context.”
“Do you dispute receiving money through Dane Advisory Partners?”
“My firm performed legitimate consulting.”
“For a vendor you approved?”
“I did not approve Arden alone.”
Nathan leaned into frame.
“You never approved it at all. That’s what the original board log shows.”
Miles smiled thinly.
“Original according to your ex-wife.”
Caroline interrupted.
“The bank documented custody.”
Miles’s eyes hardened.
For the first time, his relationship with Caroline visibly fractured.
“The Northstar vote remains scheduled.”
Nathan stared at him.
“You’re trying to sell the hospitality division to an entity you funded.”
“I have a disclosed investment interest.”
“No, you didn’t disclose it.”
“It was disclosed to outside counsel.”
“Which counsel?”
Miles said nothing.
Priya delivered the next blow.
“The trust amendment makes your control of Emma’s thirty-one-percent voting block invalid.”
Miles leaned back.
“That interpretation is contested.”
“Then we’ll let a judge decide.”
Rebecca appeared separately through her divorce lawyer.
Nathan had not expected her.
She wore no makeup.
The bruise from his slap had faded yellow along her cheek.
She looked into the camera.
“Nathan, I want you to remember something.”
Priya said, “Do not address my client directly.”
Rebecca ignored her.
“You hit me.”
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“Yes.”
“You can call me every name you want. You can accuse me of money, Miles, Olivia, whatever makes you feel better. But you hit me.”
Nathan answered before Priya could stop him.
“And I will answer for that.”
Rebecca seemed surprised.
“I am not going to use what you did to Emma to erase what I did to you.”
Silence.
Then Nathan continued.
“But you will not use what I did to erase what you did either.”
Rebecca’s eyes changed.
Something in her script had failed.
The board call ended without canceling the vote.
Minutes later, Daniel Ko arrived with another discovery.
He placed a transaction map on the table.
“This is where the missing money went.”
Arden’s unexplained funds had been divided.
$1.1 million to Rebecca-related accounts.
$980,000 to Miles-related entities.
$2.3 million into Northstar investment vehicles.
The rest through fees and intermediaries.
Nathan pointed at Northstar.
“They stole money from Cole Heritage to finance the purchase of Cole Heritage assets.”
Daniel nodded.
“Broadly, yes.”
Priya said, “If authenticated, that changes the criminal exposure considerably.”
Nathan looked at Olivia.
“We finally have motive.”
Olivia shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“You have the money motive.”
She opened one final message.
Rebecca to Miles.
Rebecca: Once Nathan loses control publicly, the board will never put him back.
Miles: Then make sure when it happens, someone is recording.
Nathan stared at the date.
Three weeks before the greenhouse incident.
Rebecca had not expected him home that afternoon.
May you like
But she and Miles had been waiting for a moment when Nathan’s temper could be turned into a corporate weapon.
And Nathan had handed it to them himself.
