Chapter 15 - The Trap Nathan Walked Into

Rebecca called from a blocked number at 11:38 P.M.
Nathan should have hung up.
Instead, he answered.
Her voice was shaking.
“Miles knows.”
“Everything goes through counsel.”
“He knows I kept the folder.”
“Call your lawyer.”
“He’s going to destroy the original audit files.”
Nathan went still.
“Where?”
“Cole Heritage headquarters.”
“Rebecca—”
“If those servers disappear, he’ll say everything Olivia has is fabricated.”
Nathan looked toward Priya’s number on his screen.
He should have called her.
He should have called police.
Rebecca whispered, “Meet me in the underground garage. Twenty minutes.”
“No.”
“You want proof? Come get it.”
The line died.
Nathan made the worst decision he had made since signing Olivia’s suspension.
He went.
Rebecca stood beside a concrete column in the nearly empty Manhattan garage.
She looked terrified.
“Where are the files?”
“Upstairs.”
“Then why are we here?”
“To see if you came alone.”
Nathan realized the trap too late.
“You recorded this.”
Rebecca’s expression changed.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
Nathan stepped backward.
“You planned it.”
“You think everything is about a plan.”
“I’m leaving.”
Rebecca grabbed his sleeve.
“Wait.”
Nathan pulled free.
“Do not touch me.”
“You ruined my life.”
“You locked Emma in a greenhouse.”
“You ruined mine first!”
“How?”
“I spent three years becoming exactly what you wanted and you still looked through me every time Olivia’s name came up.”
Nathan stared.
“So this was revenge?”
“No.”
“Money?”
Rebecca laughed bitterly.
“Money was the only thing Miles ever understood.”
“And you?”
“I understood survival.”
Nathan’s anger rose.
“You lived in an eighteen-million-dollar estate.”
“After growing up watching my mother beg landlords for another week. Do not lecture me about what money means.”
“So you stole.”
“I took what Miles said we were owed.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“We?”
Rebecca’s eyes flashed.
“He built half your company while you got the Cole name.”
“Miles was paid millions.”
“He wanted control.”
“And you wanted him?”
Rebecca looked away.
Nathan knew.
“He sent you to me.”
She whispered, “At first.”
Nathan’s chest tightened.
“At first?”
“You were supposed to trust me. That was all.”
“You married me.”
“I didn’t expect—”
“What?”
Her eyes filled.
“To care.”
Nathan almost laughed.
“You terrorized my daughter.”
“I panicked.”
“You locked her in a glass room.”
“She found that key!”
“There it is.”
Rebecca covered her face.
Nathan felt no triumph.
Only exhaustion.
“Tell the police.”
“I can’t.”
“Then tell your lawyer.”
“Miles will bury me.”
“You helped him bury Olivia.”
Rebecca looked at him.
“I can give you the server password.”
“Send it to Priya.”
“If I do that, I need protection.”
Nathan turned away.
Rebecca said, “Nathan!”
He stopped.
“I swear I never meant for Emma to get hurt.”
He looked back.
“You picked up a bucket.”
Rebecca flinched.
“You grabbed her arm.”
Silence.
“You locked the door.”
Silence.
“You picked up that cane.”
“I didn’t hit her.”
“No. You made sure she thought you might.”
Rebecca began crying.
Nathan’s voice remained flat.
“That is not an accident.”
He walked away.
At the garage exit, two police officers were waiting.
Rebecca’s lawyer stood beside them.
Nathan stopped.
The lawyer said, “Mr. Cole, Mrs. Cole alleges you violated the temporary no-contact provision by arranging this meeting and threatening her.”
Nathan stared at Rebecca.
She looked horrified.
“That’s not what—”
Her lawyer grabbed her arm.
“Rebecca.”
One officer asked Nathan to remain where he was.
Nathan closed his eyes.
He had walked into exactly the situation Priya warned him about.
Even though Rebecca had called him, even though she had invited him, he had chosen to come.
By dawn, the board had another scandal.
Nathan had not been jailed, but police documented the contact and referred it to the court.
Miles used it immediately.
At an emergency board session, Nathan was removed as CEO.
Not suspended.
Removed.
Caroline voted against it.
She lost.
Miles became interim executive chairman.
The Northstar transaction was rescheduled pending resolution of the trust injunction.
Nathan left Cole Heritage headquarters carrying one cardboard box.
Outside, reporters shouted.
“Mr. Cole, did you threaten your wife?”
“Are you losing control of your company?”
“Did your ex-wife fabricate evidence?”
Nathan kept walking.
When he reached Hawthorne that evening, Emma found him in the greenhouse.
“Did you lose your job?”
He looked at her.
“For now.”
“Because of Rebecca?”
Nathan considered lying.
“No.”
Emma frowned.
“Partly because I made another bad decision.”
She sat beside him.
“What happens now?”
Nathan looked toward the dark potting-room door.
For the first time in his adult life, he had no office, no title, and no authority capable of solving the problem.
Only evidence.

And forty-eight hours before Miles tried again to secure control of the company.
Nathan whispered, “Now I stop thinking power and truth are the same thing.”
