Chapter 18 - Rebecca’s Confession

Rebecca agreed to speak only with her attorneys present.

Nathan did not attend the official interview.

He watched none of it.

For the first time, he understood that evidence did not become stronger because he personally witnessed every confrontation.

But Rebecca asked to see him afterward.

Priya objected.

Nathan agreed only in a conference room with both legal teams present.

Rebecca sat across from him.

For several moments neither spoke.

Finally she said, “Emma?”

“Safe.”

“Does she hate me?”

Nathan’s expression hardened.

“You are not entitled to ask her for emotional comfort.”

Rebecca looked down.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

Tears formed in her eyes.

Nathan felt nothing like sympathy.

Only sadness for the person he had believed she was.

Rebecca folded her hands.

“Miles found me twelve years ago.”

Nathan waited.

“I was doing crisis communications for developers. He hired my firm.”

“You became involved.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Long before I met you.”

“And he sent you into my life.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Access.”

The word landed quietly.

“To me?”

“To your calendar. Your habits. Your confidence. Eventually the board.”

“You married me for access.”

“At first, I stayed close because of Miles.”

Nathan’s jaw tightened.

Rebecca continued.

“Then I liked Hawthorne. I liked Emma. I liked being someone people respected when I walked into a room.”

“You terrorized Emma.”

Her face crumpled.

“I know.”

“No explanations.”

“I’m not explaining.”

“You dumped filth on a seven-year-old because she found a key.”

“Yes.”

“You locked her inside.”

“Yes.”

“You used that cane to scare her.”

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Nathan’s voice broke for the first time.

“She trusted you.”

“I know.”

“No. She called you when she had nightmares.”

Rebecca began crying silently.

“She asked you to braid her hair after Olivia left.”

“I know.”

“And you used her fear of losing her mother to keep her quiet.”

Rebecca covered her mouth.

Nathan looked away.

That hurt more than the stolen money.

More than the affair.

More than the company.

Rebecca whispered, “Miles thought Olivia hid originals in the greenhouse. After Emma mentioned seeing her mother there, I started searching.”

“Emma told you Olivia came back?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“April.”

“You knew for months.”

“Yes.”

“And you never told me.”

“No.”

“Why did you dump the bucket?”

“I saw Emma lift the flower tray.”

“And?”

“I panicked.”

“That is not enough.”

Rebecca looked at him.

“I thought she had found something Olivia left. I thought if Miles learned I’d missed it, he would blame me.”

“So you frightened a child to protect yourself.”

“Yes.”

Nathan sat back.

There was nothing left to expose.

Only consequences.

Rebecca continued.

“Miles opened Olivia’s Meridian account using the passport scan I took from your household files.”

Nathan’s eyes narrowed.

“You took it.”

“Yes.”

“Who moved the money?”

“He did some. I initiated two transfers.”

“The audit?”

“North Vale was paid to produce a report that pointed toward Olivia.”

“Did they know it was false?”

“Two people did.”

She gave names.

Priya wrote them down.

“The forged trust amendment?”

Rebecca swallowed.

“I introduced Miles to the notary.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“And my marriage?”

Rebecca’s voice softened.

“Miles expected you to give me access to your shares eventually.”

“The prenup prevented it.”

“He thought a divorce scandal could pressure you into a settlement.”

Nathan stared at her bruised memory rather than the fading mark.

“And when I slapped you.”

Rebecca looked ashamed.

“I knew instantly what it could do.”

“So you leaked it.”

“Yes.”

Nathan nodded slowly.

“You didn’t make me hit you.”

“No.”

“That part belongs to me.”

“Yes.”

“But everything you did afterward belongs to you.”

Rebecca’s tears fell.

“Yes.”

Her attorney touched her shoulder.

Rebecca stood.

Before leaving, she turned.

“There’s one more recording.”

Nathan looked up.

“Miles kept an off-site server image. He ordered the corporate IT director to delete the local Arden review after the shareholder meeting.”

“Where?”

“I gave investigators the address.”

That night authorities searched a private data-storage suite leased through Dane Advisory Partners.

They recovered copied email archives, approval logs, payment instructions, and the original North Vale communications.

Miles had preserved evidence because he wanted leverage over Rebecca.

Rebecca had preserved evidence because she wanted leverage over Miles.

Their mutual distrust had built the archive that could convict them both.
