Chapter 6 - The Account With Olivia’s Name

The next morning, Daniel Ko found the account that had destroyed Olivia.

It had been opened at Meridian National Bank eleven months earlier.

Account holder: Olivia Hart.

Initial deposit: $20,000.

Subsequent transfers from Cole Heritage’s foundation account: $1.2 million.

Then almost all of it had been transferred outward.

To Arden Restoration.

Nathan stared at the records.

“That makes no sense. Why steal money and send it to a company already stealing from us?”

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.”

Priya asked, “How was the account opened?”

“Online application, identity verification, electronic signature.”

“IP address?”

“Subpoena needed.”

Nathan said, “I want it.”

“You’re not the government,” Priya replied. “We ask the bank to preserve records and provide what they can voluntarily. For the rest, we work through civil discovery or law enforcement.”

By afternoon, a more immediate problem arrived.

A CPS caseworker interviewed Emma at Hawthorne.

Nathan waited outside the playroom with Grace.

Every minute felt like punishment.

When Emma finally emerged, she looked smaller than usual.

Nathan knelt.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

“Did you tell the truth?”

“Yes.”

“That’s all you ever have to do.”

Emma looked toward the staircase.

“Is Rebecca coming back?”

“No.”

It was the first promise Nathan made that week without knowing whether the legal system would allow him to keep it.

Rebecca had already been ordered to avoid unsupervised contact with Emma while the child-endangerment investigation continued.

But she remained Nathan’s wife.

She retained lawyers.

She retained access to marital money.

And, increasingly, she retained influence at Cole Heritage through Miles.

That evening, Emma came into Eleanor’s potting room while Nathan examined Olivia’s old prepaid phone.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Rebecca used to ask me about Mom.”

Nathan looked up.

“What did she ask?”

“If Mom gave me things.”

“What things?”

“Keys. Papers. Secret words.”

His spine stiffened.

“When?”

“A lot.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Emma picked at dried mud beneath one fingernail.

“She said you would be angry at me for talking about Mom.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

He had spent months asking Emma not to discuss the divorce because he thought it upset her.

Rebecca had turned his silence into a threat.

“What happened with the key yesterday?”

“I found it under the flower tray.”

“Did Rebecca see you?”

“I think so.”

Emma swallowed.

“She came really fast.”

The bucket.

The screaming.

You destroy everything you touch.

Nathan finally saw another possible meaning.

Rebecca had not been furious about flowers.

She had been afraid Emma had uncovered something.

Priya managed to power on Olivia’s old prepaid phone.

There were only three saved audio files.

The first contained traffic noise.

The second was blank.

The third began with Olivia’s voice.

“Nathan, if you ever hear this, I need you to listen before Miles explains it away.”

Nathan leaned closer.

Olivia sounded frightened.

“I did not open the Meridian account. I did not transfer the money. I found Arden because one of Rebecca’s consulting invoices used the same billing address.”

A door closed somewhere in the recording.

Olivia lowered her voice.

“Miles has an original recording. He played part of it for me. Rebecca admits they needed me out of the trust before the shareholder restructuring.”

Nathan stopped breathing.

The audio continued.

“I asked Miles why he was helping me. He said because Rebecca had become dangerous. I did not believe him. I still don’t.”

A man’s voice appeared faintly in the background.

Olivia whispered, “He’s here.”

The recording ended.

Grace said, “That was the night in the greenhouse.”

Nathan replayed the last three seconds.

A male voice.

Hard to hear.

But there was one word.

“Olivia.”

Nathan had heard Miles say that name thousands of times.

He knew the voice.

Priya raised a hand.

“Recognition is not authentication.”

“It’s him.”

“Then we prove it.”

Nathan’s phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

One photograph.

Grace’s cottage at the far edge of Hawthorne Estate.

Taken that evening.

Beneath it:

Tell the gardener to stop helping you. Emma already lost one mother.

Nathan went cold.

Grace read the message over his shoulder.

For the first time since the greenhouse incident, she looked frightened.

Someone was no longer merely hiding a financial crime.

Someone was threatening the people who could expose it.
