Chapter 1 - The Silver Key

Bianca didn’t slap Emma.

She did something colder.

The second she saw the antique silver key in the seven-year-old girl’s hand, her face changed.

“Where did you get that?”

Emma instinctively pulled the key against her chest.

“Mom gave it to me.”

Fear moved across Bianca Carter’s face so quickly that Emma almost missed it.

Then Bianca grabbed the polished silver ice bucket from the credenza beside her.

“Give me the key.”

“No.”

Bianca dumped the entire bucket over Emma’s head.

Ice cubes and freezing water crashed through the little girl’s brown hair, soaked her cream sweater, and scattered across the carpet of the Gulfstream G650 as the aircraft cut through a violent thunderstorm over the Midwest.

Emma gasped.

Then she began crying.

“Give it to me!”

Bianca seized her arm.

Emma clenched her fist around the key.

“No!”

Bianca dragged her down the narrow aisle toward the rear galley.

“Bianca, stop!”

Maya Torres, the forty-year-old senior flight attendant, came running from the forward cabin.

Bianca shoved Emma into the small glass-fronted service compartment used during catering preparation and slammed the folding door.

Emma pounded against the glass.

“Dad!”

“Open that door!” Maya demanded.

Bianca stepped between her and the latch.

“She needs to learn.”

“She is seven.”

“She stole something.”

Emma cried from behind the door, “Mom gave it to me!”

Maya’s expression sharpened.

“What did she give you?”

Bianca turned.

That was enough.

Maya reached around her, released the safety latch, and pulled Emma out.

The child was shaking violently.

Maya wrapped a galley blanket around her shoulders.

At that exact moment, Ryan Carter emerged from the cockpit corridor.

He had been speaking with the pilots about weather and a possible diversion.

At forty-two, Ryan owned Carter Air Holdings, the private aviation company that operated the jet beneath his feet. His family’s aircraft-management business had grown into a nationwide charter, leasing, and maintenance group worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

He stopped when he saw Emma.

Wet.

Crying.

Ice melting across the carpet.

“What happened?”

Bianca changed instantly.

The fury disappeared.

“She locked Emma in there.”

Maya stared.

“What?”

Bianca pointed at her.

“She lost her temper because Emma wouldn’t listen.”

Ryan looked at Maya.

Then his daughter.

Emma’s voice broke.

“No! Bianca did!”

Silence.

Ryan slowly faced his wife.

Bianca folded her arms.

“She’s confused.”

“I’m not!”

Emma began crying harder.

During the struggle, the silver key had fallen onto the carpet.

Maya bent down and picked it up.

She almost handed it back.

Then she noticed the engraving.

N771CR.

Her breathing stopped.

“Mr. Carter.”

Ryan looked at her.

“What?”

“This isn’t just an old key.”

She showed him the tiny aircraft code.

“N771CR was one of Carter Air’s original charter registrations.”

Ryan frowned.

“That tail number was retired.”

“Eleven months ago.”

Bianca went pale.

Ryan saw it.

Maya looked toward the ceiling.

A discreet cabin-security camera covered the aisle.

“And that recorded what just happened.”

Bianca froze.

Ryan grabbed the aircraft operations tablet.

“Ryan.”

He ignored her.

Current cabin footage loaded.

There was Bianca.

The ice bucket.

Emma’s screams.

The dragging.

The locked door.

Every lie Bianca had just told him.

Ryan watched in silence.

When the video ended, he lifted his eyes.

“Why?”

Bianca backed away.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand what I watched.”

“She wouldn’t give me something that belongs to the company.”

“It belongs to Mom!” Emma shouted.

Ryan turned toward his daughter.

Emma was clutching Maya’s blanket beneath her chin.

“My mom gave me the key before she disappeared.”

Ryan’s face changed.

Claire Bennett Carter had been Ryan’s first wife and Emma’s mother.

They had divorced eighteen months before Claire vanished.

Eleven months ago, Ryan had been told Claire disappeared while traveling overseas for a consulting project.

Her luggage was found in Geneva.

Her phone went dead.

No ransom demand.

No body.

No confirmed sighting.

Only silence.

Maya handed Ryan the key.

“You said N771CR was retired,” he said.

“It was removed from active charter service,” Maya replied. “But old flight records should still exist.”

Ryan typed the code.

Bianca stepped forward.

“Don’t.”

He looked at her.

“Why?”

“No reason.”

That frightened him more than an answer.

He searched the archive.

One flight appeared.

Five months ago.

Six months after Claire had supposedly vanished in Europe.

N771CR.

Teterboro, New Jersey, to Blackridge Municipal Airport, Colorado.

Ryan opened the passenger manifest.

One name was flagged as private.

The underlying billing record had never been deleted.

CLAIRE BENNETT.

Ryan stared.

Emma moved closer.

“That’s Mom.”

Ryan’s voice barely worked.

“She was on this jet?”

Maya whispered, “Open the cabin archive.”

Ryan did.

The aircraft’s old cabin camera system had retained one encrypted clip.

Claire appeared onscreen.

Alive.

Thinner than Ryan remembered.

Her blond hair tied back.

She sat in the exact cabin where they were standing now.

Across from her was a woman whose face remained hidden by the camera angle.

Between them sat a small black metal case.

Claire placed the silver key on the table.

Maya stopped breathing.

Ryan noticed.

“You recognize that case.”

Maya looked toward the rear galley.

“Yes.”

“From where?”

“That case is still on this aircraft.”

Everyone turned.

Above the galley sat a narrow locked cabinet Ryan had passed hundreds of times.

Bianca whispered, “Ryan, don’t.”

His confusion vanished.

He walked toward the cabinet.

Inserted the silver key.

Click.

The door opened.

Inside sat the exact black case from Claire’s video.

Bianca’s face collapsed.

Ryan lifted it down.

The key fit a second lock.

He turned it.

Inside were three encrypted drives.

Claire’s passport.

A sealed legal envelope.

A small digital recorder.

And a handwritten note.

Ryan unfolded it.

His former wife’s handwriting stared back at him.

Ryan—

If Emma still has the key, then Bianca failed to find it.

Do not tell Adrian Vale what is in this case.

Do not let Bianca take Emma anywhere.

And before you decide I abandoned our daughter, understand this:

Someone inside Carter Air made me disappear.

Ryan slowly looked at Bianca.

But she was no longer looking at him.

She was staring at the name Adrian Vale.

Ryan’s oldest business partner.

Carter Air’s chief operating officer.

The man currently waiting for them at their destination.

May you like

And Bianca whispered:

“We need to turn this plane around.”
