Chapter 17 - Hangar Three

Ryan entered only after federal negotiators approved it.
He wore a wire.
Agents remained outside.
Adrian stood beside N771CR.
The hangar doors were closed.
The black case sat on a workbench.
Identical to Claire’s first.
“Ryan.”
Adrian sounded tired.
“You always come eventually.”
Ryan looked at the case.
“You found it.”
“Behind an old avionics cabinet.”
“Claire hid it.”
“Yes.”
“Open it yourself.”
Adrian smiled.
“No key.”
Ryan held up a duplicate investigators had made.
The real silver key remained with Emma.
Adrian didn’t know.
“Give it to me.”
“First tell me where Claire is.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“She’s dead.”
Ryan felt the words physically.
But he did not believe them merely because Adrian said them.
“Proof.”
“You want proof of everything.”
“I learned.”
Adrian laughed.
“That much is obvious.”
Ryan stepped closer.
“What happened after her rental car was found?”
Adrian looked toward the aircraft.
“She ran.”
“Where?”
“Into the woods.”
“You followed.”
“Yes.”
“Did you catch her?”
Adrian said nothing.
Ryan continued.
“You spent three years forging my signatures.”
“Some.”
“Stealing aircraft.”
“Reallocating assets.”
“Threatening Emma.”
“I never touched her.”
“You photographed her sleeping.”
“That was leverage.”
Ryan almost smiled.
“You still think cleaner words change acts.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“Give me the key.”
“Claire’s case first.”
Adrian picked up the black case.
“Do you know what this can do?”
“Expose you.”
“Destroy Carter Air.”
Ryan’s old fear rose.
Eighteen hundred employees.
Loans.
Aircraft.
His father’s legacy.
Adrian saw it.
“There he is.”
Ryan looked at him.
“The real Ryan Carter.”
Adrian continued.
“Claire never understood. Companies this size survive because somebody is willing to make ugly decisions.”
“You stole forty-two million dollars.”
“I built two hundred million in enterprise value.”
“With other people’s property.”
“Accounting.”
Ryan laughed softly.
Adrian frowned.
“What?”
“You sound smaller than I expected.”
Adrian’s face tightened.
Ryan continued.
“Claire said you thought my biggest weakness was the company.”
“It is.”
“Was.”
That word changed the room.
Adrian stared.
Ryan said:
“If Carter Air survives honestly, good. If it can only survive by burying Claire, stealing from Emma, and protecting you, it can die.”
Adrian’s composure cracked.
“You don’t mean that.”
“I do.”
For decades, everyone had known the company was the lever.
Now it wasn’t.
Adrian grabbed the case.
“Then you get nothing.”
He moved toward a metal disposal drum.
Ryan did not charge him.
He said one sentence:
“The key is fake.”
Adrian stopped.
“What?”
“The real key is with Emma.”
His face changed.
“You brought me a copy.”
“Yes.”
“You wasted my time.”
“No.”
Ryan looked toward the hangar door.
“I gave investigators enough time to record you.”
Adrian lunged toward Ryan.
Agents burst through the doors.
“Federal agents!”
Adrian grabbed a heavy tool from the bench.
Ryan backed away.
He did not fight.
Agents ordered Adrian down.
He hesitated.
Then dropped the tool.
Handcuffs clicked around his wrists.
As they led him away, Adrian looked at Ryan.
“You think Claire forgave you?”
Ryan felt the old wound.
He answered:
“I don’t know.”
Adrian smiled.
Ryan continued.
“And I don’t need you to tell me.”
The smile disappeared.
The black case was secured.
Emma’s real key opened it later in an evidence room.
Inside were the original duplicate-signature hardware token.
Redmoor ledgers.
Adrian’s hidden equity agreements.
Bianca’s payments.
Flight manifests.
Photographs.
Claire’s recordings.
And one sealed envelope marked:
IF ADRIAN SAYS I AM DEAD, MAKE HIM PROVE IT.
Ryan almost laughed.
Claire had predicted even that.
The case also contained coordinates.
Not for a grave.
For a storage facility near the New York–Massachusetts border.
Investigators searched.
Inside was Claire’s final evidence package.
And a small laptop.
Its login screen displayed a scheduled message.
LAST UPDATED: THREE MONTHS AGO.
Ryan stared.
Three months.
One month after Claire’s final disappearance.
Someone had accessed the laptop after she vanished.
Then a video file opened automatically.
Claire appeared.
Alive.
The timestamp was three months old.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Ryan, if you found the second case, Adrian is finally losing.”
She smiled faintly.
“And if Emma still has the key, tell her I kept my promise.”
Ryan’s eyes filled.
Claire continued.
“I am alive as I record this.”
The room stopped breathing.
May you like
Then she said:
“But I cannot come home yet.”
