Chapter 16 - The Cabin and the Call

The cabin stood deep in the Catskills.

Federal agents searched first.

Ryan waited outside.

Snow covered the ground.

Emma remained home with Maya and Laura.

Ryan refused to bring her into another uncertain discovery.

An agent emerged.

“No one inside.”

Ryan’s hope fell.

“But we found evidence of recent occupancy.”

“How recent?”

“Months.”

Helen arrived with counsel.

She admitted helping Claire reach the cabin.

“Why didn’t you contact authorities?”

“I tried.”

“You are an attorney.”

“I was being threatened with federal indictment based on forged billing records.”

Ryan stared.

“Adrian?”

“Yes.”

Helen explained.

Claire stayed at the cabin for six days.

She recovered from the warehouse injury.

She prepared an evidence package.

She spoke with Frost.

She planned to surrender everything to federal prosecutors.

Then something changed.

“What?” Ryan asked.

“Margaret died.”

His mother.

Claire heard through a news alert.

She believed Adrian had killed her.

“He didn’t,” Ryan said.

“We know that now.”

Margaret’s stroke had been natural.

But Claire did not know.

Fear escalated.

She decided Emma was next.

“What did she do?”

Helen looked at Ryan.

“She called you.”

His chest tightened.

“When?”

Four months ago.

The same night Ryan attended a Carter Air charity dinner.

Again.

“How many calls did I miss?”

Helen’s eyes softened.

“This one you answered.”

Ryan stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“What did we say?”

Helen had heard Claire’s side.

Claire asked:

“Ryan, is Emma safe?”

A man answered.

Not Ryan.

Adrian.

Ryan’s face drained.

“My phone?”

“Call forwarding.”

Rebecca immediately understood.

Carter Air’s executive communications system allowed secure forwarding during travel.

Adrian’s operations team managed it.

He had redirected Ryan’s private line.

Claire thought Ryan’s number belonged to Adrian.

Adrian told her:

“Ryan knows everything. He chose the company.”

Ryan covered his face.

Helen continued.

“Claire believed him for about thirty seconds.”

“Then?”

“She laughed.”

Ryan looked up.

Helen smiled sadly.

“She said, ‘No. Ryan is a coward about truth, but he isn’t you.’”

Ryan laughed through tears.

It was the most Claire thing he had heard.

Then Claire realized the phone system itself proved Adrian had access to Ryan’s communications.

She recorded the call.

“Where is it?”

“Hidden with the final evidence package.”

“Where?”

Helen shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“What happened to Claire?”

“She left the cabin.”

“Why?”

“To meet the FBI.”

“Again?”

“Yes.”

“Did she make it?”

Helen’s face tightened.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she called me from the road.”

Claire said two vehicles were following her.

Helen told her to drive to a state-police barracks.

The call disconnected.

Claire’s rental car was found abandoned later that night.

No blood.

No sign of struggle.

Her phone smashed on the roadside.

No confirmed sighting afterward.

Ryan sat on the cabin steps.

So close.

Again.

Rebecca’s phone rang.

Carter Air board.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

Adrian had disappeared.

His court-ordered monitor bracelet—imposed that morning after obstruction evidence surfaced—had been found cut near his home.

His private aircraft was missing from Carter Field.

Flight plan:

None.

Maya called seconds later.

“Ryan, N771CR just powered up.”

“What?”

“It’s at Carter Field.”

“How?”

“Remote alert.”

The old jet.

The aircraft containing the legacy recorder.

The physical centerpiece of Claire’s evidence.

Adrian was preparing to move it.

Federal authorities scrambled.

Then another call came.

Bianca.

From pretrial detention.

Her voice shook.

“Adrian has a second case.”

Ryan frowned.

“What case?”

“Claire’s final evidence.”

“How do you know?”

“He called my lawyer.”

“Why?”

“He wants the silver key.”

Ryan stared.

“The key already opened Claire’s case.”

“It opens both.”

His blood chilled.

Bianca continued.

“Claire had two identical cases.”

One stayed on N771CR.

The other held originals Adrian never found.

“Where?”

“Claire hid it at Carter Field.”

“Where exactly?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why does Adrian need the key?”

“Because he found the case.”

Ryan looked toward the federal agents.

“Where is he?”

Bianca whispered:

“Hangar Three.”

The same hangar where Claire confronted them four months earlier.

Adrian had returned to the beginning.

Ryan told the agents.

They moved.

Rebecca caught his arm.

“You are not going alone.”

“I know.”

That answer came easily now.

At Carter Field, tactical teams surrounded Hangar Three.

Adrian was inside.

So was N771CR.

And according to Bianca, the final black case Claire had hidden.

The confrontation was no longer avoidable.

Not because Ryan needed revenge.

May you like

Because Adrian was standing beside the last physical evidence Claire had left—

with a fueled aircraft and every reason to destroy it.
