Chapter 9 - The Woman Adrian Blamed

Lena Cho’s car accident had occurred outside Albany.

Police originally found no suspicious circumstances.

Her vehicle left an icy road and struck a barrier.

Now investigators reopened the case.

Ryan resisted the urge to interfere.

He asked Rebecca one question.

“What can we legally learn?”

That sentence pleased her.

Lena had worked ten years in Carter Air’s information-security department.

She left six months before Claire vanished.

Official reason:

Family relocation.

Real reason:

She discovered duplicate executive-signature tokens.

Tokens capable of approving transactions under Ryan’s identity.

Claire found her through Nora.

Lena met Claire four months ago at a motel near Albany.

Hotel footage confirmed Claire arrived.

Alive.

Alone.

She left ninety minutes later.

Lena left twenty minutes after that.

Her crash occurred the next morning.

Investigators recovered an old cloud backup from Lena’s personal laptop.

One folder was titled RC AUTH.

Ryan opened it only after Rebecca confirmed he could.

Inside were logs showing Adrian’s administrator account generated duplicate signature credentials for Ryan.

Three years earlier.

“That proves forgery,” Ryan said.

“Some forgery,” Rebecca corrected. “Not every disputed transaction.”

Ryan nodded.

Evidence.

Not wishful absolution.

Lena had also recorded her meeting with Claire.

Claire:

“Can he approve from my ex-husband’s identity without Ryan’s phone?”

Lena:

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Hardware token.”

“Who has it?”

“Adrian.”

Claire exhaled.

“So Ryan didn’t sign the Redmoor transfers.”

Lena:

“Not those.”

Claire went silent.

Then:

“He did sign some of the debt documents.”

“Yes.”

“He still won’t forgive himself.”

Lena replied:

“That isn’t our problem.”

Claire laughed.

Ryan closed his eyes.

Even while hiding, Claire understood exactly how guilt would affect him.

The recording continued.

Lena told Claire she had copied the token-generation logs to a physical drive.

“Where?”

Claire asked.

“A safe place.”

“Give it to Frost.”

“I don’t trust lawyers.”

“Neither do I anymore.”

They laughed.

Then Lena said:

“If something happens to me, check Hangar Twelve.”

Ryan stopped.

Carter Air owned Hangar Twelve at Teterboro.

It housed decommissioned avionics equipment.

Rebecca immediately notified federal investigators.

The hangar had been under Adrian’s operational control.

A warrant was obtained.

Inside, investigators found dozens of archived electronics.

But the specific drive was missing.

They found something else.

Claire’s scarf.

Emma identified it from photographs.

Ryan stared at the evidence photo.

“What was Claire doing in Hangar Twelve?”

No one knew.

Then Maya remembered a flight.

“Four months ago,” she said. “N771CR was repositioned into Teterboro overnight.”

“After Claire met Lena?”

“Yes.”

“Who crewed it?”

“Leonard Shaw.”

Adrian’s loyal flight-operations chief.

Shaw refused voluntary questioning.

Federal agents subpoenaed logs.

The aircraft had flown from Albany to Teterboro.

Passenger data listed none.

Cabin archive listed no video.

Deleted.

Ryan asked, “Can deleted local footage be recovered?”

Maya hesitated.

“Sometimes fragments remain.”

Federal digital specialists examined the aircraft’s legacy recorder.

A partial audio track survived.

Claire’s voice.

“Leonard, where is Adrian?”

Shaw:

“He said he’ll meet you at Twelve.”

Claire:

“I’m not giving him anything.”

Shaw:

“Then why are you here?”

Claire:

“Because Lena is dead.”

A door opened.

Another voice.

Bianca.

“Claire.”

Ryan froze.

Bianca had met Claire again after Blackridge.

The audio continued.

Claire:

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Bianca:

“I’m trying to help.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“No. You’re trying to choose which criminal scares you more.”

Ryan remembered Claire’s note.

Bianca is afraid of Adrian, but she is still protecting the money.

Bianca:

“Adrian knows about Emma’s key.”

Silence.

Claire’s voice changed.

“How?”

“He searched her room.”

Ryan went cold.

Before Bianca married him, Adrian had access to Ryan’s home through company security.

Claire:

“If he touches Emma—”

Bianca:

“That’s why you need to leave.”

Claire:

“I’m done leaving.”

The audio ended.

The next fragment was twelve minutes later.

A man shouted.

A heavy metallic crash.

Claire:

“Ryan will see everything.”

Adrian:

“Ryan sees what he wants.”

Then silence.

Ryan stared at the waveform.

Adrian had been in Hangar Twelve.

May you like

Claire had confronted him.

And after that night, no confirmed sighting of Claire existed.
