Chapter 4 - The Partner

Ryan did not call Adrian back.
That restraint took effort.
Old Ryan would have boarded another aircraft, flown directly to New York, and stormed into his partner’s office.
Claire had predicted that.
You will confront him before you understand anything.
So Ryan did something unfamiliar.
He waited.
Rebecca contacted outside criminal counsel and a forensic accounting firm.
Carter Air’s board received a litigation-hold notice before sunrise.
No email.
No server log.
No aircraft record could legally be destroyed.
At seven, Adrian convened an emergency board meeting anyway.
Ryan joined by secure video.
Adrian looked impeccable.
Sixty-one years old.
Silver hair.
Blue suit.
The man who taught Ryan how to read a fuel hedge when Ryan was twenty-two.
The man who carried Ryan’s father’s casket.
The man Emma called Uncle Adrian.
“Ryan,” Adrian began, “we’re concerned.”
“About what?”
“Your judgment.”
Ryan almost smiled.
Adrian continued.
“There was a domestic incident involving Bianca.”
“She assaulted Emma.”
“Allegedly.”
“On video.”
Adrian paused.
“You also removed sensitive corporate materials from an aircraft.”
“They belonged to Claire.”
“They may belong to Carter Air.”
“That can be decided after independent review.”
Board members shifted.
Adrian did not like the word independent.
He continued.
“You diverted an aircraft, involved law enforcement, froze company files, and contacted forensic accountants without board approval.”
“I own fifty-four percent of voting shares.”
“Ownership isn’t unlimited authority.”
True.
Ryan leaned back.
“What are you proposing?”
“Temporary administrative leave.”
There it was.
Rebecca had predicted it.
The board’s operating agreement allowed temporary suspension of the CEO for conduct threatening regulatory or financial stability.
Adrian had four directors with him.
Ryan had three.
Two independents were undecided.
Ryan could use his voting shares to replace directors eventually, but not before procedural notice periods.
Adrian wanted time.
Ryan asked, “What are you afraid I’ll find?”
Adrian smiled.
“This is exactly the behavior I mean.”
The vote passed six to five.
Ryan was suspended for seventy-two hours pending review.
Adrian became acting CEO.
Maya muttered, “That was fast.”
Rebecca said, “Prepared.”
Ryan stared at the screen.
“Bianca knew this would happen.”
“Yes.”
“She told me Adrian would destroy me.”
“Maybe she knew the plan.”
Ryan’s phone filled with business alerts.
Carter Air issued a statement describing Ryan as “temporarily stepping aside following a family incident and questions involving historical corporate records.”
Within an hour, lenders called.
A bond facility dropped in secondary trading.
Business media reported governance turmoil.
Ryan’s personal net worth fell on paper by tens of millions.
He should have been panicking about the company.
Instead he kept thinking about Emma soaked in ice water.
For years, every threat to Carter Air had become a family emergency.
Maybe that was how Adrian controlled him.
At noon, child-services investigators interviewed Ryan about Bianca.
They asked whether he had observed prior mistreatment.
“No.”
“Did Emma ever complain?”
Ryan hesitated.
“She said Bianca threw away things belonging to Claire.”
“Did you investigate?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I thought it was tension between a child and a new stepparent.”
The investigator wrote something.
Ryan felt shame.
“What else?”
“Bianca said Emma was having trouble accepting the marriage.”
“And you believed that?”
“Yes.”
He hated how often that word was appearing.
Afterward Emma sat beside him in the airport hotel.
“Is Bianca coming back?”
“Not right now.”
“Ever?”
“I don’t know.”
Emma looked at the silver key.
“Did Mom know Bianca was bad?”
Ryan swallowed.
“I think your mom knew Bianca was hiding things.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Emma looked toward the window.
“You never know until somebody shows you.”
It was not an accusation.
That made it worse.
Rebecca entered.
“We found Nora.”
Ryan stood.
“Where?”
“Flagstaff.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Property-tax records under her maiden name.”
“Call her.”
Rebecca did.
Nora answered.
The moment Rebecca said Ryan Carter’s name, Nora tried to end the call.
Ryan took the phone.
“Nora.”
Silence.
“Claire left me a case.”
Another silence.
Then Nora whispered:
“She trusted the wrong person again.”
“Who?”
“You.”
Ryan absorbed it.
“Probably.”
That answer made Nora stay on the line.
He continued.
“I need to know what happened after that flight.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian still owns people around you.”
“Then tell me who.”
Nora laughed quietly.
“You still think names solve everything.”
“What do you want?”
“I want proof Emma has the key.”
Ryan looked at his daughter.
“Why?”
“Because Claire told me if Emma still had it, at least one part of the plan survived.”
Ryan activated video.
Emma appeared holding the silver key.
Nora’s expression collapsed.
“Oh, sweetheart.”
Emma frowned.
“Do I know you?”
“No.”
“Did you know my mom?”
Nora began crying.
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
Ryan stopped breathing.
Nora closed her eyes.
“I don’t know where she is now.”
“Now?”
Ryan moved closer to the screen.
“When did you last see Claire?”
Nora answered:
“Five months ago.”
The same day as the archived flight.
Ryan’s pulse jumped.
“Where?”
Nora looked terrified.
“Blackridge Municipal Airport.”
“What happened?”
“Claire got off the jet.”
“With you?”
“Yes.”
“And then?”
May you like
Nora whispered:
“Adrian Vale was waiting for us.”
