Chapter 12 - The Trust

Claire had created the trust eighteen months earlier.

During the divorce.

Ryan remembered signing acknowledgment papers.

He had barely read them.

Rebecca examined the original court filings.

“This is legitimate.”

“What exactly does Emma get?”

“Claire’s seventeen-percent Carter Air interest if Claire dies.”

Ryan flinched.

“And if she remains missing?”

“The shares remain Claire’s, but an independent trustee can act if a court finds incapacity or wrongful concealment.”

“Who is trustee?”

Rebecca read.

“Daniel Frost.”

Ryan stared.

Claire had anticipated corporate warfare.

Frost now had standing.

That changed everything.

He filed suit in Delaware Chancery Court to block the Redmoor sale.

The complaint alleged conflicted transactions, forged consents, breach of fiduciary duty, and diversion of corporate assets.

Redmoor paused negotiations immediately.

Adrian’s plan stalled.

For the first time, he lost leverage publicly.

Carter Air’s lenders demanded an independent investigation.

The board placed Adrian on temporary leave.

Ryan expected satisfaction.

Instead he felt dread.

Cornered men made dangerous choices.

Maya received a call that night.

She answered.

Her face changed.

“Mr. Carter.”

“What?”

“Someone accessed N771CR.”

The jet had been moved from secure storage.

“How?”

“Flight-operations authorization.”

Adrian’s credential should have been suspended.

But Leonard Shaw’s backup account remained active.

The aircraft had been taxied into Hangar Twelve.

Ryan stood.

“The case?”

“With federal investigators.”

“Key?”

Emma had it.

Safe.

Maya continued.

“There’s something else.”

A maintenance request had been created.

REMOVE LEGACY CABIN RECORDING SYSTEM.

Adrian wanted the final local archive destroyed.

Ryan notified investigators.

Agents secured Hangar Twelve before technicians could touch the recorder.

The technician claimed he received the order electronically.

From Ryan Carter’s account.

Another forged authorization.

But this time independent monitoring captured the source.

Adrian’s home IP address.

Rebecca smiled.

“He finally made a mistake after the controls changed.”

Ryan did not celebrate.

They now had digital evidence tying Adrian personally to misuse of Ryan’s identity.

That evening Emma asked why everyone wanted the old camera.

“Because it remembers things people want forgotten.”

Emma thought.

“Like Maya’s camera when Bianca lied.”

“Yes.”

“Cameras don’t get scared.”

“No.”

“People do.”

Ryan looked at her.

“Yes.”

Emma took out the silver key.

“Mom got scared.”

“I’m sure she did.”

“But she still hid stuff.”

Ryan nodded.

“That was brave.”

Emma looked at him.

“Was it smart?”

He thought of Claire refusing to trust him.

Of every danger she faced gathering evidence.

“Sometimes.”

Emma frowned.

“Not all brave things are smart?”

“No.”

“Like you calling Adrian?”

Ryan laughed softly.

“Exactly like that.”

The next day Leonard Shaw completed his cooperation proffer.

He admitted following Claire in Boston.

Adrian ordered him to bring her to the coastal hangar.

Claire was held there for eighteen hours.

Adrian demanded the location of the original trust schedule and silver key.

She refused.

“Did he hurt her?” investigators asked.

Shaw said Adrian shoved her once.

No serious injury.

He threatened Emma repeatedly.

Then Claire offered a trade.

She would reveal where the black case was if Adrian let her call Ryan.

Adrian agreed.

A call was placed.

To Ryan’s private number.

Ryan froze when Rebecca told him.

“When?”

Four months ago.

He searched his memory.

That night he had been at a charity dinner in Manhattan.

Bianca sat beside him.

His phone had disappeared for about an hour.

He assumed he left it in the car.

Rebecca continued.

“The call connected.”

“To whom?”

“Someone answered.”

“Who?”

Shaw heard Bianca’s voice.

Claire said:

“Put Ryan on.”

Bianca replied:

“He doesn’t want to speak to you.”

Ryan stood.

“No.”

Shaw continued hearing only one side.

Claire begged.

Bianca said something quieter.

Then hung up.

Claire looked destroyed.

Ryan turned away.

Bianca had not merely hidden Claire’s evidence.

She had blocked Claire from reaching him.

Shaw said Adrian then laughed.

“He told Claire, ‘You keep believing Ryan would choose you if he knew. Bianca already knows he won’t.’”

Ryan shut his eyes.

A lie built on Ryan’s history.

Effective because Claire had reasons to believe it.

Then Rebecca added:

“Shaw says Claire escaped the hangar the next morning.”

“How?”

“She hit a fire alarm and left during the response.”

“Then what?”

“Adrian ordered Shaw to find her.”

“Did he?”

“Yes.”

Ryan’s chest tightened.

“Where?”

Shaw’s answer:

May you like

“At Carter Field.”

Claire had gone back to the place where Carter Air began.
