Chapter 14 - Margaret’s Secret

Ryan’s mother had known Claire was alive.

The revelation hurt differently.

Margaret Carter had spent her final weeks weak from heart disease.

Ryan visited daily.

She never told him.

“Why?” he asked Maya.

“Claire asked her not to.”

“That’s everyone’s answer.”

Maya’s face hardened.

“And what would you have done if your mother told you?”

Ryan opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Four months ago?

He would have confronted Adrian.

Called Bianca.

Ordered security teams.

Created exactly the chaos Claire feared.

Maya continued.

“Margaret believed Claire.”

“Where did they meet?”

“At your mother’s house.”

Ryan remembered one strange evening.

Margaret canceled dinner with him.

Said she was tired.

Claire had been there.

“What did Claire want?”

“Family-trust documents.”

Of course.

Margaret was trustee of the Carter Family Aviation Trust.

The original aircraft schedules were not in Carter Air’s offices.

They were in Margaret’s private safe.

Claire believed the black case contained copies but needed originals for federal evidence.

“Did Mom give them to her?”

“Yes.”

Ryan stood.

“Where are they now?”

“No one knows.”

Margaret died before speaking to investigators.

Her safe contained nothing when Ryan later opened it.

Someone had removed documents.

Bianca had access during the funeral week.

So had Adrian.

Maya continued.

“Claire left your mother’s house carrying a blue document tube.”

“Where did she go?”

“She wouldn’t tell me.”

“Did you ever see her again?”

Maya shook her head.

“No.”

Ryan looked devastated.

“You lied to me on the aircraft.”

“I told you the last confirmed footage I knew was Claire on that jet.”

“You knew she was alive later.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me after Bianca attacked Emma?”

“Because I was afraid.”

“Of Adrian?”

“And you.”

Ryan flinched.

Maya continued.

“You had just discovered everything. You were furious. I thought if I told you I had hidden Claire, you’d destroy my credibility before I could help.”

Ryan said nothing.

“That was unfair,” Maya added.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“It was earned.”

Maya began crying.

Ryan exhaled.

“I’m angry.”

“You should be.”

“But I’m listening.”

That mattered.

Margaret’s estate records revealed one missing asset.

A private storage box at an aviation museum in Connecticut.

Ryan obtained lawful access as executor only with investigators present.

Inside was the blue document tube.

Claire had returned it.

The original Carter Family Aviation Trust schedules were intact.

They proved six aircraft transferred to Redmoor could never legally have been sold without Claire’s original signature.

The signature pages used in the transaction were counterfeit.

The diverted value exceeded thirty million dollars.

Adrian faced devastating financial-fraud exposure.

But there was more.

Margaret had added a handwritten statement.

I met Claire on May 14.

She was alive and frightened.

She told me Ryan did not know about Adrian’s fraud.

She refused my offer to call Ryan because she believed his home was compromised.

I gave her the original trust records.

She left at 9:10 p.m.

She said she was going to meet Bianca one final time.

Ryan stared.

Bianca again.

Prosecutors confronted Bianca.

Her cooperation deal nearly collapsed.

She finally admitted the meeting.

Not at a house.

Not at Carter Air.

At a hotel near LaGuardia.

Claire brought the trust documents.

Bianca brought copies of Adrian’s private ledgers.

They planned to go together to federal prosecutors the next morning.

Ryan almost laughed.

“They were going to cooperate?”

“Yes,” Rebecca said.

“What changed?”

“Adrian found them.”

“How?”

“He tracked Bianca’s car.”

The hotel garage camera still held partial records.

Adrian entered at 11:03 p.m.

Claire and Bianca left at 11:41.

Bianca looked frightened.

Claire looked furious.

They entered Adrian’s SUV.

“Voluntarily?” Ryan asked.

“Impossible to tell.”

Bianca said Adrian threatened Emma.

Again.

He told Claire that Carter Air security had photographs of Emma asleep in Ryan’s house.

Ryan went cold.

“Did they?”

Investigators found old unauthorized security photos on Adrian’s devices.

Emma’s bedroom window.

School gate.

Park.

Enough to terrify a mother.

Claire entered the SUV.

Bianca went with her.

Destination:

A warehouse owned by a Carter Air maintenance vendor in New Jersey.

The building had been demolished two months ago.

The land was being redeveloped.

Ryan stared.

“Demolished by whom?”

Rebecca answered:

“Vale Aviation Security.”

Adrian had destroyed the scene before the investigation began.

But demolition did something unexpected.

Environmental regulations required soil sampling.

One sample contained trace human blood.

Old enough to match the right period.

The lab was testing DNA.

Two days later Rebecca came to Ryan’s house.

She did not sit.

Ryan knew.

“Claire?”

Rebecca nodded.

May you like

The blood belonged to Emma’s mother.

And the quantity suggested a serious injury.
